Relaxation & Awareness

Once after a long "relaxing" bath in the hot sulfur springs in the temple at Vashist, Manali, I was so happily dazed that I walked away leaving my things behind. When I returned later, it was predictably gone! As I complained about the lack of morals of people stealing from a temple & how I was so relaxed that I left my things behind to Swamiji, my yoga teacher there, he made a very interesting point. "If there is no awareness, then you are not relaxed, your condition would be better described as a drunken stupor. "

Relaxation goes hand in hand with awareness. The more aware you are, the easier it is to relax; this is experienced firsthand in a shav asana or the dead body posture in yoga.

Relaxation & Healing

The human body has a tremendous capacity to heal itself. In relaxation, the process of healing will automatically start; all the various systems in the body - the nervous system, the digestive system, the lymphatic system, etc. will start to function efficiently. When you are relaxed, you breathe deeper, you sleep well, you feel energetic and happy, you eat only as much as you need to and you are more loving and compassionate to people around you. You spread this happiness and the good vibration to everyone around you...the list carries on and on! : )

Ever heard of the expression "carrying the weight of the world on one's shoulders "; any massage therapist will tell you that is true! Most people store tension in their shoulders. Awareness will lead to simple changes like a better posture- simple changes which give huge positive results!

Massage therapy works wonders when going through emotional upheavals; it helps to provide strength and comfort. During the massage, most people start to breathe in a very natural, rhythmic and relaxed manner. This breath works wonders in allowing the body to heal itself, allowing emotions to be released. A massage therapist among other things also helps to create a feeling of love and acceptance for one's own body.

After a massage allow yourself to take it easy, to stay in this relaxed state. Support the elimination of toxins started by the massage by drinking lots of water and eating fresh and raw fruits and vegetables.
